Recognizing the decades of work done by Leagues and their members, President George Bush, assisted by his wife, Barbara Bush, presented AJLI with the prestigious President’s Volunteer Action Award. Association President Maridel J. Moulton accepted the award.

The Junior League of Los Angeles became the first League to start an AIDS-awareness project, later working with other Leagues to set up their own programs. The Junior League of Mexico City, for example, introduced AIDS education to Mexico.

Leadership training for teenagers

With a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, The League and The Quest National Center initiated a national leadership training program for youth called Project LEAD (Leadership Experience and Development).

The former movie star and Junior League of Los Angeles member served eight years in the role, working hard to raise awareness of drug abuse among the young through her famous “Just Say No” campaign.
