JL Lancaster, PA, purchases and restores James Buchanan’s Wheatland home, preserving a piece of national history.

JL Raleigh, NC, began hosting the North Carolina Governor’s Inaugural Ball, a fundraising and community celebration honoring newly elected state leaders and generating proceeds that support local nonprofit programs — a tradition the League continues to uphold today.

JL Birmingham, AL, establishes a Salvage Station to collect clothes, household and other items for those affected by the Great Depression.

The Children’s Theatre of Charleston opens thanks to funding and support from JL Charleston, WV.

In response to unemployment during the Great Depression, JL Cincinnati Members fed 1,000–1,500 men a day at the Cincinnati Opera while the League’s Legislative Committee produced monthly reports on emerging economic relief legislation that would later inform what became the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
