2007 Honorable Mention: Citizenship Project
Objective:
After being approached by another community nonprofit to help Somali women in the community prepare for the U.S. citizenship test, The Junior League of Fargo-Moorehead JLFM created the “Citizenship Project,” designed for Somali women immigrants.
Strategy:
JLFM created a curriculum from scratch focusing on the three branches of government and the Constitution. By offering the course to women only, JLMF addressed a cultural barrier for the participants whose norms include segregation of the sexes. To set goals of increasing diversity and community impact, JLFM collaborated with several other organizations in research and development of the curriculum. Classes were delivered to 20 women over an 8-week period.
Impact:
The success of the program has enabled JLFM to identify a community partner that will assume responsibility to the program and continue to offer the curriculum developed by the League.
