2006: Cultural Competency Program

The Junior League of Houston, TX

Realizing the importance of communicating effectively with diverse populations, The Junior League of Houston created a program designed to establish a link between its mission, its strategic planning and the concept of diversity. In 2003, the League began its diversity initiative by conducting a 360-degree cultural competency audit, which included a study of the League and its partners as well as a study of the city of Houston. The Cultural Competency Program created a set of cultural competency guidelines and a set of in-depth placement-specific project guides. The League’s bold new program proved a powerful and effective tool in reaching out to League members and their culturally diverse community.
