JL Summit, NJ, establishes the Summit Speech School to provide oral education for children deafened due to a 1960s epidemic of maternal rubella.

JL Albany, NY, establishes Albany’s Volunteer Bureau, which matches Capital Region organizations with volunteers. The bureau becomes one of 30 Volunteer Action Centers in the United States.

JL Columbus, GA, helps establish the Historic Columbus Foundation to preserve historical sites throughout the city.

JL Hampton Roads, VA, and the Warwick Rotary Club fund the establishment of the Junior Nature Museum and Planetarium.

JL Minneapolis, MN, begins offering music therapy to a variety of groups, from schools to nursing homes.

JL South Bend, IL, restores the library at the County Historical Society, remodels an exhibit, and develops docent programs and traveling exhibits.

JL Lynchburg, VA, helps found the Lynchburg Sheltered Industries, an organization that provides employment to  people with intellectual  and physically disabilities.

As Dutch Elm Disease devastates tree-lined streets, JL Sioux City, IA, participates in Project PEACH (Planned Environmental Action Can Help) – a community effort – to help stymie the fungus and beautify the city for future generations.

JL St. Louis, MO, launches Junior Kindergarten in a joint venture with the YMCA. Junior Kindergarten assisted disadvantaged children prepare for public school.  This program became the role model for the federal Head Start program.

JL Santa Barbara, CA, helps develop the Child’s Estate, a community project that would later become the Santa Barbara Zoo.
